My book in the event is Buchanan House—the first book in my first-ever series! It made the USA Today Must-Read Romance list the year of its original release and I’m super proud of it, but it was almost a very different story.
I took a trip to Lincoln City in 2014 before starting a new job—a long weekend at the beach to get some writing done. While I walked on that lovely beach, I started thinking about setting a story at a beach resort. An Oregon-style beach resort. And originally the story was going to be a mystery!
That was scary because I’d never written a mystery, but I saw the opening scene so clearly, so I played around with it for the rest of the day. But then I decided I didn’t want an actual dead guy in the story. We have enough dead queers in literature without me adding to the total on the page.
So then I tried to think of a way to have a compelling mystery without a dead body—something I’m still working on by the way!
By the next day I’d explored enough of the surrounding area to know that I wanted the resort to be a happy and hopeful place, not somewhere people expected bodies to turn up. So, the Buchanan House series was born. Each of the main books in the timeline start with a funeral (and “funeral” is in quotes more than once, you’ll have to read the books to see what I mean) and end with a wedding. The two novellas outside the main timeline—Pride Weekend and Holiday Weekend—don’t have either, but both have HFN endings.

Nathan chose that moment to enter, in his pink robe with the ostrich-feather trim. He spoke quickly, almost dancing through the room and toward the aroma of coffee. “Good morning. You don’t mind I borrowed your robe? And this must be Tim. Lovely to meet you, sweetheart. Coffee, then business.” He flounced into the kitchen.
Eric and Tim watched him go. The silence in his wake stretched out a little too long for Eric, who was mortified by the thought Tim might believe the robe belonged to him.
“What’re you planning to do with the place?”
“Run a retreat—a camp. We’re going to call it Buchanan House.”
“You the Buchanans?”
“What? Us? No, not us…. Nathan and I, we’re friends.” Eric wasn’t sure why the air had suddenly evaporated from the room, but he didn’t like the feeling. “We bonded in middle school over the hand dryers in the bathroom. We both used them regularly to combat the effects of swirlies.”
Tim pursed his lips and nodded. He looked like he was trying not to laugh, or getting ready to peck his grandmother on the cheek. Thinking that sent a shiver down Eric’s back.
“It’s for James Buchanan.”
“The president?”
“Yep.” Eric still wasn’t sure how it would go over, but he tried to pretend he didn’t care. “The confirmed bachelor president with a very close male friend. This will be our own little melting pot.”
Tim watched him closely and, after a moment, nodded again.
Eric wasn’t sure what Tim made of all that, but he didn’t seem upset. Actually, he didn’t seem to have much emotion at all. A pang of jealousy stabbed through Eric’s chest. He’d give a lot to feel a little less for a change.
Buchanan House
Eric Allen and his bestie buy a neglected hotel on the scenic Oregon coast to fulfill their middle-school dreams of co-owning a B&B. The building is in decent shape but in order to turn Buchanan House into the gay resort of their dreams, it’s going to need work.
Tim Tate is a skilled carpenter with many hidden talents, and a body that could grace the pages of a fitness magazine. When he and Eric meet, it’s mutual lust at first sight. Despite the intense attraction, both men are hesitant to fully out themselves by acting on it. But when they give in, it’s obvious that they’ve found something special—and not only in bed.
Before Eric can be free to love the gorgeous handyman they have to make it through the July4th grand opening. With rain that won’t stop and a meddling brother intent on wreaking havoc, can the holiday still go off with a bang?
