The one year anniversary of the Rainbow Snippets Facebook group is (loosely) next week. Yay for a year of queer snippetting!
First, I want to thank everyone for joining, participating, and telling your friends about the group. I didn’t think it would take off like it has and am grateful and a little verklempt by the turnout. You guys rock. ❤
I’ve been thinking about plans and goals for 2017 lately, and how to grow our networks and careers while deepening our feeling of community. Along with that, I’ve been trying to figure out how to use my blogs more (plural because I’m starting the pseudonym Charli Coty to, eventually, replace this one). Over the past couple of weeks I’ve tried to blog something (anything!) other than promo once per week. Even that much has been difficult. Maybe a little friendly motivation will help.
When I started this pen name in 2012 I was fairly active on @MondayBlogs. For those of you not familiar, it’s another no-pressure group that RTs blog links. I dipped a toe back into those waters last week and felt like I was the only queer at the party. It wasn’t a horrible experience, but it made me wish for a similar space for people like me. So, I’m thinking of starting something like that for queer content and contributors.
To that end, I’ve set up the Twitter account @QueerBlogWed and the hashtag #QueerBlogWed
Why Wednesday? Because I’m bisexual and Wednesday is the middle of the week just like my 3 is in the middle of the Kinsey scale. I’m not saying I’m a perfect 3, but I had to choose a day and this felt right. To be honest, no matter what day I chose it would still be a challenge to come up with something to talk about every week.
Every group needs rules, so this is what I came up with: post to your blog on Wednesday and share on Twitter using the #QueerBlogWed hashtag and/or @QueerBlogWed. No promo, just like here in #RainbowSnippets. Your posts don’t have to be long, just a few paragraphs that aren’t BUY MY BOOK. All the social media experts say to engage on a personal level and grow your network through genuine interactions—that’s my vision for @QueerBlogWed, a space that’s by, for, and about everyone under the rainbow.
Just like in the Rainbow Snippets group no sign-up is necessary and we’re all free to participate when it works for us, and take weeks off when it doesn’t.
Who knows, maybe it’ll take off and we can all meet new bloggers and Tweeps, and have a little fun. Maybe queers outside the genres we write in will join us–everyone under the rainbow is welcome, not only authors.
Maybe the best part is you won’t have to wait for me to get started in the morning! Whenever Wednesday starts in your time zone, that’s when you can startblogging and tweeting about queer lit, queer politics, writing, cooking, your vacation, or anything else your heart desires to blog about.
Consider this your invitation to join #QueerBlogWed on November 30th.
What do you think? Any comments, questions, and suggestions are welcome.
