My Year: 2020

I’m taking a break from editing to reflect on 2020 and think about what I want to accomplish writing-wise in 2021, so I thought I’d share a little of it!

2020 wasn’t an easy year, but I got more done than I thought! I re-released my M/M Romance with a side of kink with a sexy new cover and a new title, and a boxset of the Buchanan House series with an amazing set of covers by the talented LC Chase.

The boxset includes a bonus epilogue, which was also the first new story I wrote and published since my car accident in 2017. It was so much fun to visit the Buchanan House family again. I love those guys!

I had a few ideas for paranormals and Dark Romances, so I indulged my inner horror-fan and wrote those. Upwardly Mobile is a story in The Devil’s in the Details & Other Stories that I’d started a while ago and finally finished this year. It was an especially cathartic story for me and I hope you enjoy it. The titular story in that collection was inspired by the cover, which was a new experience for me and one I’ve repeated.

Obviously I got the darkness out of my system, because my 2020 Christmas story is probably the lowest-angst I’ve ever written! Handspun is a short and sweet story I’d been wanting to write for a while. I wasn’t sure it was on brand, though, so I held back. It’s not super angsty like most of my writing, but I think that’s okay. 😊

In November I drafted a new novella during NaNoWriMo and am almost ready to send it to betas and have it edited. I’m super proud of it, and am looking forward to getting it out into the world! It’s book two in a new series—more on that as it gets closer to release!

I also have plans for a book three in that series, and a new series of three novellas. Those stories should take me through the first half of 2021. Once I know what I want to accomplish after that, I’ll let you know.

Happy Holidays! I hope you have a wonderful holiday and a happy and prosperous 2021!

A haunted house snippet…

Hello Snippetteers! The weather is getting cooler & the days shorter–at least where I live! As we inch toward the shortest day of the year, I’ve been doing a lot more reading and writing. My NaNo WIP is nearing the halfway point, and it’s a contemporary. I already can’t wait to share it with you. 🙂

This week I’m snipping from my last release, The Devil’s in the Details & other stories. This is from the last story, which takes place on winter solstice. It’s a Paranormal Dark Romance, which means it’s creepy and dark but also has a happy ending (depending on how you define “happy ending”). The Haunting of Elkins House definitely isn’t fluffy, but it’s my winter holiday story this year so I hope you enjoy it.

The shortest day of the year was no time to run past a haunted house, especially as shadows lengthened in the late afternoon sunlight. Dave shuddered when he passed the sprawling Gothic Revival by the lake. Even the lovely Christmas lights twinkling on the houses and reflected in the calm water couldn’t dispel the eerie feeling. As his mother would have said, he felt as though a goose had walked over his grave.

By purely aesthetic standards, the house was beautiful—from the wraparound porch with its turned railing to the decorative cornices and elaborate chimney.

But the stretch of path around the lake that wound closest to Elkins House was always colder than the rest of his route. Even on the brightest days the sun never seemed to penetrate the mature trees and the shadow of the imposing house itself.

The Devil’s in the Details & Other Stories

by Charley Descoteaux

Read three Paranormal Dark Romances featuring characters with shaky moral compasses as they get their Happily Ever Afters!

Here’s what you get inside:

The Devil’s in the Details

James is on the run from the Key West Coven and the job he never wanted: enforcer. Portland, Oregon, is as far away as he could get and still be in the US, and since he doesn’t have a passport or a way to get one, that’s where he stopped. James knows his freedom is anything but secure, so he’s not surprised when his proximity alarm alerts him that he’s being followed. He’s jumped under the Burnside Bridge and wakes in iron shackles that prevent him from using magic.

Marshall knows too much about his father’s business dealings with the supernatural underworld. He never would have guessed that knowledge could get him kidnapped. When a witch in iron shackles is tossed into his cell, his life changes forever.

The pair will have to work together if they’re to escape with their lives.

Warnings / Temptations: violence, inappropriate flirting, tattoos of dead languages, and sexy spellwork.

Upwardly Mobile

Riley MacIntyre can’t write, and it’s driving him mad. A serious head injury silenced the voices of characters in his head, and nothing he’s done has helped. After 440 days of silence and insomnia, Riley receives an invitation from the proprietor of a local business, whose pitch is that he can fix anything. Riley needs to resume his career writing mystery novels, but having a man on a late-night commercial set an appointment is, to say the least, unexpected.

Don Cross is a fixer. He’s also a lonely crossroads demon. When Riley visits him hoping to have his writer’s block fixed, Don makes him an unusual deal.

Warnings / Temptations: off-page murders and violence, depictions of descent into both figurative and literal Hell, a dapper crossroads demon, and an asexual man who expresses his romantic feelings using baked goods.

The Haunting of Elkins House

Dave Lehman lost his partner to cancer seven years ago and is still grieving. He’s jogging with a neighbor’s dog on the winter solstice when he receives a life-changing invitation.

Elkins House has been abandoned for over a century. So who is inviting Dave inside?

Warnings / Temptations: suicidal ideation, a disobedient dog, and a few drops of blood.

A spooky snippet…

Hello Snippetteers! I hope you’re well & staying safe out there!

I’ve been on a dark kick for a while now (quarantine will do that to a person!) and am snipping from my Dark Romance collection & new release, The Devil’s in the Details & Other Stories!

This is from the first story (which shares a title with the collection :)), and is from the love interest’s POV. Marshall has been sitting in a cell for a few days with only himself for company.

But Marshall had never had much of a head for business—especially not the kind of business his father ran. A high-level accounting firm by day, and money laundering by night.

His captors could be anyone. Or anything.

Yes, any-thing.

Marshall wasn’t supposed to know that witches and werewolves and vampires were real. And his father was involved in shady business dealings with some of them.

Thanks for reading!

A magical snippet…

Hello snippetteers! I hope you’re staying safe out there!

This week I have a snippet and an offer for you. First, the snippet (but be sure & read the bit after the snip :)).

Metal, Magic & Mayhem is a dark romance that’s with my editor now & I’m pretty sure this is the first time I’m sharing from it outside of my reader group. The story follows two guys as they perform illusions at a traveling heavy metal show.

The snip is seven sentences because it sounded better that way. #SorryNotSorry 😊

Dean was not only on auto-pilot, he was slow in slipping the handcuffs because he was busy thinking about the peek he’d gotten of Steve in the shower that morning. Their hotel room was even tinier than the stage and he couldn’t help but see. It wasn’t the first time he’d been treated to a view of Steve’s shower-slicked skin. The rooms they splurged for were always tiny, so it didn’t take any special maneuvering to catch a look at his sculpted abs and tempting cock. Dean loved the way Steve’s dark blond hair patterned the gentle slope of tanned skin on his back, the sections shaped like the blades in their act, all pointing to his nearly fluorescent-white round ass. It also wasn’t the first time the sight had drove him to horny distraction.

First time during a show, though.

 Thanks for reading!

If you liked this snip & want to read the whole story you can, either by joining my Facebook reader group or subscribing to my newsletter. Metal, Magic & Mayhem will be free to group members and newsletter subscribers (as soon as it’s finished :)), and it won’t be available anywhere else. I’ll be sending the newsletter in about a week, so don’t wait!

In the meantime, visit Rainbow Snippets and check out everyone else’s stories!

Book Blast: Spell of the Werewolf by J.R. Loveless!

I’m thrilled to help the lovely J.R. Loveless celebrate the release of her latest, Spell of the Werewolf! Congrats, J.R. & thanks for sharing an excerpt!

The crunching of bones breaking and mending echoed off the cement walls and metal cage surrounding him, while his gasps of pain mingled with the excruciating change until Justin lay there a panting, trembling mess. He curled into a fetal position, staring at the bars and wondering how much longer he could continue to live through the unbearable transformation. Every full moon he became a monster with no thought of anything except feasting on flesh, human or otherwise. He’d lock himself in a steel cage lined with silver in the basement of whatever house they were renting to stop himself from hurting anyone on the three nights he couldn’t control himself.

“You’re back to normal, I see.” A low voice came through the darkness.

Justin closed his eyes against the brightness of the light flicked on and Kara, his best friend and caretaker, stepped toward the cage with keys in hand. She unlocked the door, then the chains, and helped him to his feet. After handing him his clothing, she went back upstairs without another word. Kara was the only person in his life who knew about the beast inside of him. She’d been a loyal friend and his only family for the last ten years. But before her, he’d spent almost two hundred years on his own, merely surviving.

Despite his outward appearance of an eighteen-year-old young man, he’d actually lived for two hundred and eighteen years. He stood at an even six foot with a wiry, lean build, which never changed no matter what he ate or how much he exercised. Black hair, as dark as a moonless night, just brushed his shoulders when he didn’t keep it tied back. Most humans found it hard to stare into his eerily light blue eyes. Maybe because they could sense the evil lurking beneath the surface, or perhaps they could see the creature pacing inside him, waiting for the nights it could be free.

In the time since his life changed forever, he’d seen many wonderful and horrible things: the invention of trains, cars, and airplanes, wars, slavery, death, and blood. The only cure he knew of to end his torment was either death or to kill the one who’d bitten him. His desperate search led him here, to Japan, where he spent every waking hour not working trying to find word of the bastard’s whereabouts.

Justin made his way upstairs to the kitchen and found Kara cooking breakfast on the old stove in the house they’d rented. He watched her as she moved about the tiny kitchen. Petite at five-foot-two, she had beautiful auburn hair that hung down her back to her hourglass waist. She kept it in a ponytail most of the time. Bright green eyes complimented the light dusting of freckles across her nose. He cared for her a great deal, even loved her in his own way, but he knew it wasn’t the kind of love she wanted from him.

Thirty-five now, she’d found him ten years ago lying in the bushes in her backyard the morning after a full moon. He’d had large wounds all over his body from a fight he’d been in with another werewolf in the area. She’d tended his injuries and taken care of him until he’d regained consciousness. When he’d awakened, she’d demanded the story from him; she said it was either that or she’d call the police. So he’d told her everything, his past and the monster hiding beneath his flesh. They’d been together ever since, moving from place to place in search of the one who could break his curse. They both worked odd jobs during the day to support them as they moved from city to city and country to country. It’d been her idea to build the cage lined with silver and secure it to the ground wherever they were.

Setting a plate on the table for him and another for herself, she slid into one of the chairs. “You were overly anxious last night. More so than usual.”

Justin looked at her and then away. He picked up his fork but didn’t begin eating immediately. “I don’t remember anything, you know that, Kara. Maybe there’s another werewolf close by.”

There were many malevolent creatures in the world that humans remained unaware of, or they chose to ignore the obvious signs, writing off anything unexplained as animal attacks. Mostly, his kind stayed away from one another unless they felt threatened. “Tonight’s the last full moon, for this month at least. I don’t know how much longer I can take this, Kara. I want it to be over.”

Kara studied him for a long moment before replying, “We’ll find him, Justin. You just need to have patience.”

“How much more patience can I have, Kara?” Justin snapped. “It’s been two hundred years. Another hundred and I’ll go insane!”

She looked at him sadly but didn’t say anything. They sat in silence for the remainder of breakfast. Justin barely touched the scrambled eggs, attempting a bite or two to appease Kara, but he couldn’t stomach the idea of eating. He knew she meant well, and she couldn’t really understand why he wanted to die, but her words only served to reinforce why he couldn’t continue to live like this.

After breakfast, Kara washed the dishes and then grabbed her purse. “I’m on my way to work. I’ll be back before the sun sets to lock you in.”

He watched her leave, staying at the table even after she’d gone. The night he’d been bitten played in his head like a mini movie, almost as if it were someone else’s reality. It was 1802, and he’d been out drinking at a local tavern, celebrating the birth of his best friend’s baby. When the owner finally kicked them out at two in the morning, he started toward home, weaving along the street in his drunkenness. Most people were tucked in their beds asleep. No noises could be heard other than the odd stray cat in the alley garbage bins or the lone bark of a dog in the far off distance. A loud crashing sound echoed off the cobblestones and in between buildings just before a large heavy weight slammed into him. He flew through the air, landing with a thud on the unforgiving street.

He realized a huge animal, something akin to a wild dog, lay on top of him, pinning him to the ground. Before he could react, the animal sank his teeth into his shoulder. Justin remembered screaming in pain as blood poured from the torn flesh. He heard a gunshot as someone came running down the street, yelling to scare off the dog. The animal let go and ran off, leaving him lying in a pool of his own blood.

The man who’d saved him had taken Justin to his home and rung the doctor. The doctor stitched him up and bandaged his wound. Justin returned to his own home the next day and went about his normal life. The wound healed in a miraculously short amount of time, and he’d begun to notice strange things happening to his body in the following weeks. He found himself abnormally attracted to the scent of blood, and he could smell things from several hundred feet away. His eye sight and hearing grew sharper, and his strength increased three fold.

The first full moon came a little over three weeks after he’d been bitten. He was out chopping firewood for his parents when it started. He thanked God every day since then that he hadn’t been home when it happened. He remembered dropping to his knees as a sudden pain gripped his entire body. His screams of anguish filled the forest behind his home; the snapping of his bones breaking was the only thing louder than his cries. Hair sprouted along his hands and arms; his jaw elongated into a snout. He could still feel the terror he’d felt during his first change. He lost consciousness afterward or so he’d thought. He figured out the next morning that when he became the monster inside, he lost all control of his awareness and the beast took over.

The only thing he remembered was waking up covered in blood the next morning. He’d vomited at the grisly sight beside him. A mutilated body of a man lay near him. He couldn’t even identify the face of the man, to know who he’d been, because his face had been torn to shreds and then gnawed on by some great animal. He’d gone to the nearby river to wash the blood away the best he could and made his way slowly toward home, where he’d snuck into his room to pack some of his things. He left a note for his parents telling them he was sorry, but he could no longer stay with them. They weren’t safe with him. He’d saddled his horse and left for good.

He’d been running ever since. The only person he’d gotten close to in the last two hundred years was Kara. Even after ten years he still feared for her safety, but she never let him take off alone no matter how many times he tried.

Spell of the Werewolf

Two centuries ago, Justin was turned against his will into a werewolf – a mindless, angry beast three nights a month. Ever since, he has done everything he can to atone for the blood on his hands, even going so far as to hunt his own kind. The burden of carrying on is heavy and unforgiving, and he’s reached the point of not caring if he lives or dies.

Vincent is a hybrid, half-werewolf and half-human, spending his days, and nights, hunting werewolves. Vincent may be half-monster, but he lives and breathes by his human half. Hunting werewolves and taking down as many of the creatures as possible is all he can see.

A chance meeting changes everything. A deal struck between them, a threat to humanity, and their mutual attraction combined brings them together in an explosive way. Vincent has found the one who can break down the walls around his heart – will he now be able to carry through on his promise to end Justin’s torment, or will Justin live to see another moonrise?

A new (ish) release snippet…

Hello Snippetteers! I hope you’re safe & well! I’ve had #quarantinebrain and totally forgot to post about my release on May 15th! I’d planned to share some snips in the weeks leading up to the release, but that didn’t happen either. So here’s one now!

This is from the opening of The Demon & The Bass Player, my first-ever Horror Romance! There are 7 sentences, because it just made more sense. The last one is short, but you can skip it if you want to. 😉

The ghosts of machinery lay outlined in dust and grime on the floor, like bodies at a crime scene, and the only windows formed a ring around the top third of the two-story room. Except for the skylight in the center of the ceiling. Perhaps its purpose had originally been ventilation, but with clouds scudding past the full moon framed by the skylight, it made Reed shiver. He wished he could take Zach’s hand to steady himself, but Zach had hung to the back of the line, as usual.

Besides, it wasn’t as though they were a couple. A few hookups to ease the pain of a breakup, or threesomes with a current boyfriend, didn’t count. Except in Reed’s mind, they did.

The Demon & The Bass Player

Reed thought “summoning a demon to make a deal” was a euphemism, or maybe a team-building exercise. The members of struggling alt-rock band Wishbone Crow are desperate for success, and their souls seem like a small price to pay for musical immortality…until it all goes horribly wrong.

When the ritual goes sideways, will Reed and his friend-with-benefits Zach escape with their lives?

A creepy snippet…

Hello Snippetteers & Happy Caturday! If you’re celebrating this weekend, I hope you have a lovely–and safe–holiday!

Today I’m snipping from a WIP that completely disrupted my plans for this morning. It’s very rough–as in, I just wrote these words a few minutes ago–but I’m sharing anyway. I need all the writerly energy I can get right now. Even though this isn’t my official Camp NaNo story, I’ve written my 1K on it today (plus a little more) so I’m happy!

For some reason I’m doing better with creepy/scary stories so far this year instead of the fluff I had anticipated (and planned for LOL)! But I’ll take it! #Quarantinelife is better with voices in my head, they can tell me any stories they like. 😀

No intro for this one, because I’m not 100% sure where it’ll end up, or how long it wants to be. Don’t forget to squint while reading so these un-edited sentences won’t hurt your eyes. 🙂

Dave always shuddered when he passed the sprawling old house. He swore the temperature was always colder than on the rest of his route—even in the summer the sun never seemed to penetrate the mature trees and the shadow of that house. He would have preferred a different route entirely, but he took his elderly neighbor’s dog with him when he ran, and the path between the lake and the crumbling Gothic mansion was the best, and safest, place to run. The sun was a distant memory everywhere on the shortest day of the year, but when Dave came in view of the house he still shivered.

Jack, the energetic German Shepherd Mr. Brown adored, pulled at his lead and let out a short bark, taking Dave by surprise. Jack had never so much as stepped out of the heel position, regardless of how excited he was to go for a run.

Book Blast and #Giveaway : Devil’s Jawbone by BJ Sheppard

BlackRC

Excerpt:

Janine Richards had been the first to see the body, arriving an hour early to train for that Friday’s track meet. Through the indigo rays of morning, she had expected peace and quiet but instead had been gifted with the body of the football team’s quarterback hanging from the centre bar of the goal post. The police had arrived after her frantic call and all the yellow tape in the world couldn’t stop the student body from stopping to share in the horror, the grief that had blanketed DJ High.

Riley fought his way through the crowd and stopped only when Logan’s body, still hanging one hour after its discovery, swung lazily on a gentle autumn breeze. His stomach lurched and his eyes prickled, yet he couldn’t peel them away.

What, only one day previously, had been a generally happy, albeit momentarily pissed, Logan Greenway was now reduced to a bloating blue-black sac of meat swaying from the goal that Riley himself had scored over several times at practice the night before. The soccer net around his neck had bitten bloodily into his neck, which was pitched at an awkward angle and coated with what looked like thick black paint under the gentle rays of morning sun. Riley fought the urge to run, closed his throat against the violent clench in his stomach that had only occurred before when he was sick, and turned from the body that was once his teammate.

Logan had not been suicidal, that much was the truth. He had been distracted, pissed at Coach for his harsh behavior, but Logan Greenway had been the boy who had it all. Nothing about his life had held a suggestion that things weren’t going exactly the way he wanted.

Riley thought to his own home life, to the secret of his father’s sudden departure that lingered on the tip of his tongue ready to be spilled. Everyone has a secret, he thought, playing nervously with the straps of his rucksack. But what was Logan’s?

It didn’t matter anymore. Logan Greenway was dead. And school was out for the day.

Meet the author:

My name is BJ Sheppard and all at once I found myself an author. Such a strange sensation to actually feel you deserve the thing you had aspired to for many years. After all, all it took was computer access and an inner world that reads like a Sheryl Crow song to pound the keys and translate my crazy ideas onto the page. I feel like I could have business cards printed. Maybe wear a black roll neck and perch my glasses on the tip of my nose. I could drink whisky and smoke a cigar and do all those really stereotypical things I imagine all writers do. Perhaps I could get laid a little more? This is not the end. Nor the beginning. Hell, it isn’t even about me. My boys write themselves; I really don’t have that much say in the matter. As long as my characters need a voice, I have two chubby typing fingers and a need to please— watch this space: there is more to come.

Book Blast & #Giveaway: Haunted Hotties 2!

RCExcerpt:

Excerpt from Everything a Big Bad Wolf Could Want by McKay

He rolled his head to look at Harlan, wanting to make sure he was all right, only to find Harlan lying on his side, looking at him. They gazed at each other in silence for a long moment, then Harlan reached out and stroked Whimsy’s cheek.

“My wolf likes you,” he said, his voice raspy with a strange undercurrent like a growl beneath the surface.

“That’s good, isn’t it?” Whimsy mustered a smile, trying to resist the urge to nuzzle against Harlan’s fingers. That wasn’t his right.

Suddenly, Harlan moved, and Whimsy found himself pinned beneath Harlan’s large, heavy, naked body. “It likes you more’n it likes Barbara.”

This close, Whimsy could see something feral in Harlan’s eyes, as if the wolf hadn’t loosened its grip completely yet, and he wanted to call it forth. He wanted to belong to it, and he was overwhelmed by a desire to show his throat and surrender that he’d never felt with anyone before.

“Maybe that should tell you something,” he said boldly. If he were a noble, self-sacrificing man, he would have extricated himself and encouraged Harlan to think only of his girlfriend, but he wasn’t that noble or self-sacrificing, and he couldn’t bring himself to feel terribly guilty about it at the moment.

“I like women. But there’s something about you, Whims…” Harlan bent his head and ran his nose along the length of Whimsy’s throat as if scenting him, and Whimsy shivered as he tilted his head back.

Whimsy shifted beneath Harlan just enough to seat Harlan’s lean hips in the cradle of his thighs, and Harlan settled there like they were made to fit together. Feeling bolder, Whimsy slid one hand along Harlan’s arm to rest on his shoulder, testing to see what Harlan would allow.

“Liking women doesn’t mean you can’t like men too,” he pointed out. “It’s not an either-or thing for some people. Maybe you like both.”

“Maybe I do. I’ve thought about other men before, including you. I don’t know.” Harlan released a long, slow sigh. “There’s a lotta things I don’t know these days.”

“I know I like you a lot,” Whimsy whispered, sliding his hand to the back of Harlan’s neck and stroking it gently. “I think we could be good together.”
