Cay writes songs for the band he helped form in high school but doesn’t see any way to turn music into a career. The half marathon seemed like a decent way to pass a Saturday, make his boss happy, and catch a performance of his old band all at the same time. Budget Books: Entering Giveaways!

One way to feed a reading habit is to enter giveaways. I don’t do that much since I started publishing my own books, but I entered a LOT of giveaways in the early days of ebooks. Those free ebooks–mostly by authors I’d never heard of, let alone read before–fueled my love of reading and helped me feel less alone as a queer person in a straight world.

If you’d like to enter to win free ebooks, there are Facebook groups dedicated to giveaways and freebies in many genres. Facebook’s search bar should turn up a promising group or two.

Joining Rainbow Readers Club is also a great way to find giveaways–both public and those exclusive to the group. In fact, the group has a Valentine’s Day giveaway going now featuring MM Romances in a few sub-genres! You don’t have to be a member to enter but joining will get you more entries!

Budget Book Rec: Backstage Beginnings by Erin McRae & Racheline Maltese

I chose this week’s book rec because I’ve read these authors before and loved the stories, so when I saw they had a $0.99 short I snatched it right up.

Two of the things I knew going into this story were that there would be polyamory—which is something I don’t see enough of in queer fiction and love to read when it’s done well—and a musician.

 

Dates were hard. Dates that involved seeing his boyfriend’s other boyfriend…totally more hard.

 

Both of those things are right there in the blurb so they’re not spoilers. But I also knew, from reading McRae & Maltese’s work, that the main characters would be in public life—so, maybe a rock star, actor, or something like that. Since my own life is ordinary, reading from a celebrity’s point of view is a welcome change from my day-to-day which is mainly taken up by the Evil Day Job and pursuing an artistic dream that’s a longshot at best.

 

He was somewhat tempted to play the groupie, as Andrew had halfway suggested. It would at least be a script to follow, but one that came too close to the mix of business and pleasure he was determined to avoid.

 

It would be spoilery if I told you exactly what these men do for a living and why they’re all together, so I won’t. It would also be spoilery to go into details about the steamier aspects of this short, since it is very short, so I won’t do that either. Suffice to say it was a hot read and I enjoyed every word.

If you’re in the mood for something a little longer, I would also recommend their Love’s Labours series. Which is now available in a single volume (and priced accordingly). Which is convenient because once you read the first one you’ll definitely want to go on to the second! Love’s Labours is an M/M Romance too, so if you’re in the mood for a Romance with actors and age gap, I bet you’ll like it.

Backstage Beginnings

Jack is dating Andrew. Andrew is dating Christian. And polyamory works just fine for all of them.

At least until Andrew wants Jack to be his date to see Christian’s band play at a local bar. Jack’s all for sharing, but having to make nice about other people’s artistic ventures when he’s not involved with them sounds like a recipe for disaster.

Despite his misgivings, Jack wants to be a good boyfriend and finds himself saying yes… to a whole lot more than he bargained for.

Budget Book Rec: Shameless Self Promotion!

Over the past week & change I’ve been taking a class and learning how to market my work better and reach more readers. It’s been a challenge, and sometimes fun, and a LOT of new information every day—which is great!—but all that has left me with no time to find a budget book to rec this week. I’ve been reading (and working on my March 6th release!) but mostly paperbacks so I can get away from a screen for a little while. It’s been fun re-reading some favorites from my bookshelves and I recommend doing that once in a while, if you don’t already.

So. Today I’m going to plug my own budget book, the first Buchanan House Love Story, Buchanan House. It’s $0.99, so you can meet the family without breaking the bank. For the 2nd Edition I’ve combined Buchanan House and Pride Weekend into a single volume, so you get two full stories for that dollar!

I’m not going to quote from the book or tell you what I like about it—beyond that it’s chock full of hurt / comfort, which is my favorite trope! All the books in the series have different tropes, but most also have an element of hurt / comfort. Click any of the book covers in this post (or a buy link, of course!) and you can decide for yourself which quote stands out or if you love the characters (spoiler alert: I love them all!).

Buchanan House

Free Book Rec: King Kong vs. The Skinny Pirate by Addison Albright!

Now that NaNoWriMo is over, I have more budget book recs!

I’m reading a great MM Romance novel right now, but it was only free for a few days so it won’t work for this post. I will say, though, be sure to follow your favorite authors on social media (if you don’t already), so you can grab their free and $0.99 books while they’re on sale. My kindle is full of books my faves have kindly offered for free or $0.99. I pull one—or two!—up every week or so. These budget books really stretch my tight reading budget!

(Yes, that was a hint. If you don’t follow me already, you might want to start. It is the season for gifts! 😊)

So, today’s free book! I wanted to read a light MM Romance to balance out the angsty novel. Addison Albright is a regular contributor to Rainbow Snippets so I know she writes light-hearted stories & writes them well. That sounded like the perfect thing for this hectic week. I’m so glad I picked it up! Opposites Attract is one of my favorite tropes and the two men in this short story couldn’t be more different!

 

King Kong grinned. “Feelin’ desperate, are ya?”

 

Opposites Attract is also a trope that can be overdone easily (for me) but Albright uses a light touch with the humor. Neither man seems like a stereotype, they both feel real and multi-faceted. We only spend 17 pages with them in this Romance, but I stand by that assessment. Their flirting is original and fun, and I wanted to see them get together.

 

The beard and mustache tickled Blaine’s face, and the hair covering George’s body was incredibly stimulating.

 

This book is also steamy for such a short story! If you only have a short time to read and want to get a complete story with some smiles and sexy-times, you might like King Kong vs. The Skinny Pirate.
