RELEASE DATE: July 8, 2016

BLURB: Fairy tale endings weren’t made for people like me. Happy for now usually ain’t in the cards, either.

The dents on my wall from where my headboard kept knockin’ against the same spot was the first clue that I needed to calm my ass down. At the rate I was racking up notches and plowing through hookups, I wasn’t ever gonna find nothing real. Guess I kinda jinxed myself. I created my circumstances. You can’t get what you want if you keep falling back into the same pattern of bad habits. But then things changed. I stumbled onto somethin’ I never in a million years expected to happen. You gotta understand, I’m never the guy who wins. It was supposed to be just sex, but that shifty, rhyming and scheming bastard, Cupid, pulled a fast one.

I may have changed some stuff to protect a couple of people. But before you go believing the tabloids, make sure you understand that you’re gettin’ the lowdown straight from the source.

I needed to get this off my chest and it’s only fair that you at least get my side of it all. At some point, I might regret telling you any of this, but for now, you need to know.

*Disclaimer* This is a novella. Not a short story, novelette, or novel. This tale features an M/M pairing. If gay erotica/erotic romance is not your cup of tea and you are offended by same-sex relationships or crass language, you should bypass this story. Content is intended for a mature audience, 18+.

Complexity is the fourth installment in The Kinky Connect Chronicles. The Kinky Connect Chronicles are short erotic stories/novelettes all wrapped up in neat little bows. These stories are standalones. No cliffhangers in the lot!
Excerpt

Could we be more different? Him: famous, rich white dude. Me: Latino entrepreneur who stocked up on ramen noodles and peanut butter when Key Food had a sale. This dude was so beyond my scope but he didn’t act any differently than a hookup I would’ve scored downtown at one of the gay bars in Chelsea.

Honestly, I didn’t know if me taking this shit with Christopher to the next level was a good thing or a bad thing. I held my own. I had my own business and made money legitimately doing shit I loved. Some days were a struggle, and I fell on hard times every now and again, but I woke up with a sense of purpose. Maybe I was overthinking things. I knew this was just about sex, but I couldn’t help but wonder if I was some sort of pity fuck or if Chris had a Latino fetish. He seemed genuinely attracted to me, but you know, there’s always somebody on the web lookin’ to get their rocks off with that token piece of ass.

I needed to stop with the assumptions and just take the moment for what it was, because an opportunity like this wouldn’t ever happen again.

Stayin’ in my head was gonna fuck everything up, so I focused on the twinkling lights near the waterfront seventeen stories down. “Good, I don’t bareback either. If rubbers aren’t required, we ain’t fuckin’. Seems like it’s a little too late to be having this discussion, but I’m clean. I get tested every six weeks. Got a copy of my results in my wallet if you wanna see.”

He raised an eyebrow. “Every six weeks? Sleep around a lot?”

I laughed, pulling off my polo. “I like sex. I like safe sex. I like to be certain I stay safe, so if that means gettin’ tested more often, I’m cool with that.”

“He’s a good guy,” Greg said from his side, and he turned to look at the man.

“Charlie?”

“Yeah…. He really likes you, you know?”

Josh couldn’t help the warmth flushing his cheeks at the words. Of course he knew Charlie liked him, but it was nice to hear it from someone else.

“Did he tell you that?”

“Sort of. But even if he hadn’t, it’s kinda obvious.”

ABOUT THE BOOK

Life isn’t always fair, and that’s something that Llewellyn Gardner knows about first hand. His life was on the fast track until one night of extreme passion changed everything.

Now eight years later, he’s still living with the aftershocks of that night. Everywhere he turns or runs, there’s another reminder. What the hell do you do when you try to drown your demons only to find out they can swim?

Shane Smith, Jr. owner of Smith Construction, could see the emotional turmoil within his new employee — it’s why he hired him. There was something about the gorgeous, misunderstood man with the overly expressive eyes that came to their small town with a past no one was willing to overlook. Shane could see the good in Llewellyn, and those eyes of his were a clear window to his soul. Shane wasn’t going to let the man live a future of solitude because his past had been plagued with deceit.

Llewellyn wasn’t sure what to think about Shane. After years of protecting himself from being tricked twice, he was now faced with worry again. What would happen to him if Shane didn’t believe his truth, and walked away? Llewellyn wasn’t sure he’d be able to survive being left alone. Again.

EXCERPT

“Thinking of going in? Or are you just gonna block the entrance?”

Llew turned at the sound of the sure voice behind him. Since he seemed to tower over everyone he looked down at the pretty brunette with dark brown eyes to match. “Um. Sorry.” Llew mumbled quickly moving out of her way.

“Well don’t be sorry shuga’, just escort a lady inside.” Llew didn’t blink as he watched the lady stalk towards him. Her full chest sat above an extremely narrow waist. It almost looked unnatural. She dressed and wore the amount of makeup that a grown woman would, but her smooth face and approach screamed her real age. She was jailbait if he’d ever seen one. Llew gave her a slight head nod and turned to leave when his elbow was hooked.

“I saw you in the general store applying for a job. You musta’ jus’ got into town, because if not I’d have known, honey. So you got kin here?”

Silence.

The laugh was an all-out immature giggle and it graded on his nerves. “Cat got your tongue, darlin’”. She moved in even closer and dragged a long red nail down Llew’s arm, tilting her head back to look up at him. “You want me to beg, huh? Come on now, handsome. Escort a lady to a movie… then maybe -”

“Maybe when he sees’ a lady… he’ll escort one.”

Llew diverted his attention away from the overzealous minx that was practically humping his leg and focused on the beautiful man approaching with another guy in tow. His voice wasn’t overly deep like his own, it was a smooth and melodic southern drawl. Like he could be a singer or a poet. He walked with an unhurried gait that was a mixture of ‘I’m in charge’ and ‘you’re on my time, not the other way around’, and Llew found it sexy as fuck. His tall friend chuckled behind him, moving away to purchase their tickets. Is he on a date? No, their demeanor definitely said ‘friends.’

“Mind ya’ own business Smith, Jr. I saw him first.”

Smith, Jr.

The man hooked one thumb in his pocket not the slightest bit fazed at the remark. But Llew was thrown. Was this guy actually gay or was she being a smart aleck? The man gave him nothing to go on. He moved closer towards them and Llew got a nice whiff of his spicy, bold cologne when a cool breeze blew his way. It was an interesting contradiction, because the man’s entire persona said ‘cool and composed’.

“Mosey along, Sallie Ann. Don’t make me ring ya’ daddy. He told me keep an eye on you while he’s gone and I agreed. He’d be rather put out if I didn’t follow through on my promise.”

She reluctantly let go of his arm, letting loose a long drawn out huff of annoyance. Llew didn’t bother watching her walk away. She was irrelevant. With his hands tucked deep in his pockets he eyed the man in front of him with a mixture of curiosity and wistfulness.

“Sometimes a person has gotta’ run interference with that girl. She’s usually not that bad but her daddy’s outta’ town, so ya’ know how young girls can be.”

Actually, not really.

“Hi. I’m Shane Smith, Jr.” he stuck out a large, calloused hand and it took Llew a couple seconds to process that he was going to touch him. Llew shook his hand, his mouth still closed tight as he watched the man’s eyes. They were light brown and full of humor and amusement. He immediately thought that this was obviously a guy who had little worries if any in life. Wait a minute…Smith….Jr. Is he the owner of? He let go of the strong grip on his hand and wished he’d been able to hold it a little longer.

“And you are?”

Llew swallowed before answering. “Llew.”

Those eyes twinkled again and dark brown brows rose up in question. “Llew…just Llew.”

It was a humiliation when a man hated to tell someone his name. But by doing so it meant that they would soon know who he really was. Know who he was classified as. He didn’t want this man to know that, god help him he didn’t. But lying wasn’t an option. Fuck it. “Llewellyn Gardner.”

So many broke eye contact with him and Llew was more than intrigued that Mr. Shane Smith, Jr. was staring at him just as hard as he was staring back. He didn’t know why he was looking at him that way but he didn’t mind it.

“Now that’s a name.” Smith smiled beautifully.

Llew wasn’t sure if this guy was flirting with him or not, he’d been in a place where flirting didn’t exist for so long, he’d forgotten what it looked like…what it sounded like. The way Shane Smith, Jr. was smiling at him it sure seemed like it. Llew could imagine himself with a strong man like this. A man who was gorgeous but didn’t know it. Not overly done up in fancy digs, he was dressed like a working man but he wore that look well. He appeared simple but confident, like a man that followed his own counsel and was not easily persuaded. But Llew wouldn’t dare get his hopes up. As soon as word got out that there was a newly registered sex offender in their quaint little town, Smith, Jr. might be leading the lynch mob to run him out of there.

Guest Author: Sue Brown!

Please welcome the lovely Sue Brown! (Who definitely does not appear frayed IRL, no matter what she says. :))

I’m curled up on my sofa with the two mutts snoozing next to me and Captain America: The Winter Soldier on the TV. I’ve been staring at this page for a while but I have to confess, having just written 6 other blogs I’m blank for a subject. Would you mind if I just burbled for a moment?

My real life friends and I are, shall we say, at the latter end of our working lives, but my friends have two things against them. Firstly, they are back in the workplace after bringing up their kids, mostly in junior roles, and secondly, suffering from ageism as younger bosses judge them for being too old to work.

Ageism, whether aimed at the young or the old, seems to be pervasive at the moment. We don’t value age and experience, we don’t value new ideas and energy of the young.

I’m luckier. I work for myself and at the moment, I don’t think my age (almost 48) is against me. Okay, I’m not young and hot, more like middle-aged and frayed, but I can live with that. My fellow authors and I cover the age span, and I don’t think any of us would judge the others for it. We all bring something different to our stories.

I’ve read extensively these last few months because of the Rainbow Awards. I can’t say I could tell the age of the author from the books I’ve read, except maybe from the cultural references. I do know I need to get into the 21st century. I can’t use Die Hard forever as my go to film. Yes, it is a Christmas movie!

Stolen Dreams by Sue Brown

After cheating on and losing the man he loved, Morgan Conway decided to get his life right. Now he owns a coffee shop and is engaged to Jase, an actor and rising star. All is perfect in his world until the man he thought was gone forever walks into his shop. His hidden feelings rush to the surface, unfortunately there for everyone to see, including his fiancé.

Shae Delamere was crushed when Morgan cheated on him five years ago. But he has a reason for seeking Morgan out. As Morgan and Shae get to know each other again, they discover the extent that friends meddled in their lives to keep them apart. Morgan cannot deny he is still in love with Shae, but he is engaged. With some hard decisions to make, Morgan struggles not to hurt the men he cares about—again. Shae has secrets he came to share with Morgan, but revealing them now could keep them apart for good.

Excerpt:

ONCE HE started work on Stolen Dreams as first assistant director, Morgan had little time to think beyond the endless meetings with the director and planning each shoot. Xander Bannatyne was a notorious control freak about every aspect of the shoot, which irritated Morgan, but he had learned so much from the director that he invariably kept his mouth shut until he had time to formulate a better argument. In return, Xander appreciated Morgan’s ability to take over all the day-to-day details of production. Morgan aspired to someday be second unit director, but for the time being, he was happy to learn his trade at the hands of directors like Xander Bannatyne.

His days were busy and full of phone calls, meetings, and more meetings. His nights were strained and deadly quiet. For the first time in their relationship, Jase was avoiding him, and it took Morgan back to the darker times with Shae, when the sound of the front door closing on an empty apartment seemed to happen more and more often.

Elroy just gave him an incredulous look when Morgan tried to discuss the problem with him. “Dude, he’s just met the third person in the relationship. This is the guy he could never compete with, which was fine while Shae wasn’t around, but now Elvis is in the building and what’s more, it’s obvious you’ve still got a hard-on for him.”

About Sue: Sue Brown is owned by her dog and two children. When she isn’t following their orders, she can be found plotting at her laptop. In fact she hides so she can plot and has gotten expert at ignoring the orders.

Sue discovered M/M erotica at the time she woke up to find two men kissing on her favorite television series. The series was boring; the kissing was not. Guest Author: Andrew Q. Gordon!

I’m excited to be the opening stop on Andrew Q. Gordon’s First Love tour! Not only is it part of his popular “Champions of the Gods” series, it’s a freebie! Thank you for sharing it with us, Andy!

Thank you Charley for letting me come by and talk about the new free release.

First Love has its origin in what was basically one sentence in The Last Grand Master. At one point Farrell tells Prince Peter of Belsport in passing about his first love. It was ten years before the opening of The Last Grand Master and Farrell’s mother—Queen Zenora—and teacher—Heminaltose—were still alive.

First Love not only shows what Farrell was like before the war began, it also let’s me show his mother and teacher, through his eyes.

Of all the characters in the series, Farrell is naturally the most fleshed out. The story is through his eyes. But what of the secondary characters? The Champion of the Gods series is well over 2 million words long. Much of that is filler and background that I wrote to flesh out the story that will never see the light of a Kindle. Writing it, however, made it easier to write the entire story.

Since this is the first day and first stop of the blog tour, I thought it would be a good idea to talk about one of the main characters we meet in First Love; Lieutenant Cameron of the Queen’s Guard. He is Farrell’s first real crush. In the original draft, Cameron had a much bigger role in the story, but was removed during the rewrite. He may, however, make an appearance later on. The changes I made that wrote Cameron out in Book 2: The Eye and the Arm might will require a bit of a rewrite later that may give Cameron an opportunity to make an appearance.

In the first draft, Farrell finds Cameron alive along with other survivors of Yar-del. Unknown to Farrell, Queen Zenora sent the better part of the Navy elsewhere to prevent Meglar from capturing the ships. Given the size and power of Yar-del fleet (perhaps second only to Dumbarten) denying the enemy this weapon was vital to the war effort. With these ships, Meglar would have the means to attack Dumbarten, Yar-del’s closest ally. To prevent this, Zenora made an agreement with the King of Dumbarten to use a small island well off the Dumbarten coast as a naval base. Cameron is one of the officers sent with the fleet.

First Love doesn’t show much beyond their first date. In The Last Grand Master Farrell explains that the romance didn’t last. In the original draft, when Farrell meets Cameron, they have a heart-to-heart and Farrell learns that after Cameron broke his heart, Queen Zenora removed him from the guard and sent him off with the navy. In Yar-del, the naval was a vital and respected branch of the military. So while this might not have been what Cameron wanted, it did offer him more opportunities to advance his career than would be available in the guard. In the unused part, Cameron does take advantage of his new position and rises to high rank among the survivors.

My real hope is to rescue some of the unused bits on the cutting floor at a later date, but for now, First Love will be the only appearance for the dashing young Lieutenant Cameron.

Enjoy!

 First Love by ~ANDREW Q. GORDON~

Prequel to The Last Grand Master
A Champion of the Gods Story

On a visit to Yar-del with Grand Master Heminaltose to celebrate his age of majority birthday, Farrell catches the eye of Lieutenant Cameron, a handsome young officer in the Queen’s Guard. But having spent most of his life cooped up at Heminaltose’s school for wizards, Farrell is clueless as to palace intrigue. He is unaware that his access to the queen is something others would greatly prize. When the queen points out that his suitor is the son of a social climbing minor noble, Farrell must decide whether to heed the warning or meet with Cameron anyway.

EXCERPT

Tenth hour would take an eternity to arrive, but they both had to attend to their duties. Although Cameron seemed suitably impressed by his appointment, it didn’t improve Farrell’s mood.

He stopped himself as he started to think of ways to get out of dinner. Not going wasn’t an option. More importantly, Heminaltose only allowed Farrell brief visits to Yar-del City to see his mother. Skipping dinner meant one less chance to spend time with her. And he’d see Cameron at tenth hour.

“Boy.” The deep voice behind Farrell made him freeze.

He turned slowly but already knew who he’d find. “Master Heminaltose.”

Dressed in his formal blue-gray robe, he leaned on his white wooden staff and tilted his head to the left. “What brings you to this out-of-the-way place? And why are you just standing there?”

Farrell had been in trouble often enough to know his master suspected him of something. When he tried to answer, his mouth went dry and his tongue turned to stone.

“Well?” The older man raised his bushy white eyebrows and peered down his nose at his student. “I’m waiting for an answer.”

His euphoric mood dashed, Farrell knew better than to lie. “I came here to meet someone.”

“Someone?”

“Yes, Master, someone.” This approach never worked, but he’d been too embarrassed to answer directly.

“Don’t treat me like a fool.”

Despite being at least an inch taller than his teacher, Farrell felt like Heminaltose towered over him.

“I’m not, Master. I… I just….” His cheeks flushed and he started to sweat. “I’d rather not say.”

“Excuse me?”

“It’s private.”

“Private? You mean…?” Heminaltose jerked his head back and his eyes opened wider. “By the Six! Now? Your hormones have decided to kick in now?”

About Andrew: Andrew Q. Gordon wrote his first story back when yellow legal pads, ball point pens were common and a Smith Corona correctable typewriter was considered high tech. Adapting with technology, he now takes his MacBook somewhere quiet when he wants to write.

He currently lives in the Washington, D.C. area with his partner of nineteen years, their daughter and dog. In addition to dodging some very self-important D.C. ‘insiders’, Andrew uses his commute to catch up on his reading. Guest Author: Whitley Gray!

Whitley Gray is here today! She’s talking about her inspiration for Artistic Endeavor, sharing an excerpt, and holding a giveaway. Please make her feel welcome! 🙂

What inspired you to write Artistic Endeavor?

I joined with a group of authors to write stories set on a fictional college campus—Cathia University. At least one of the characters had to have a university connection. Exploring the theme of a man who had suppressed who he is because of a strict religious upbringing versus a man who is king of the one-night stand held a lot of appeal. I usually write characters who are well out of their teens; Cobey—although inexperienced with intimacy— is twenty-five and has a Master’s degree.

How much do you know about a story when you start to write a first draft?

It depends on the story. For this one, it was easier to plot organically: they meet, escalating action, crisis, resolution. Writing mystery/suspense takes considerably more planning and time—at least for me.

How much of your own life and personality do you put in your work?

Hmm…my life, not much, other than I like to write characters in the medical field. That goes back to write what you know—it’s a comfort thing. Same with location. As far as personality, I think every writer inevitably puts in bits of that. I don’t duplicate people I know, and none of my characters are just like me. Voice is the way you string words together, and the words and manner come back to life experience and what flows for the author.

I’m horrible at titles—how do you choose yours?

I like short titles. A title should sum up what the book is about. “Artistic” covers Cobey’s job as an art professor and Michael’s job as a freelance graphic artist. “Endeavor” suggests a pursuit, in this case the pursuit of sexual experience on the part of Cobey, and the unexpected awakening of love in Michael.

What’s the strangest/silliest/scariest/coolest subject you’ve ever researched for a book?

There have been quite a few. The scariest was probably home invasions for High Concept. Discovering there is a website dedicated to the subject and how to avoid becoming a victim was a bit hair raising.

Tell me a little about yourself—what do you do when you’re not writing?

I work at the dreaded day job. J I do enjoy DVD movies—I’m not much for going to the theater—and I like to try new recipes.

What are you working on now?

The second High Concept book. Beck and Zach are back in a new twisted adventure.

Artistic Endeavor by Whitley Gray

When friends ask one-night stand connoisseur Michael Esteban to introduce college professor and virgin Cobey Miller to the joys of sex, Michael balks. Lust is his thing, not leading a twenty-five year old novice. But shy Cobey has problems meeting men, and their introduction fuels Michael’s decision to help Cobey become a gay-sex-loving guy. It’ll all be fun and games—unless someone falls in love.

EXCERPT:

In the dimly lit bar, Michael drummed his fingers on the table. “Maybe you should have let me meet him somewhere without you two along as chaperones.”

Eli chuckled. “It took me a week to convince him to meet you. He’d never go for the blind date thing.”

“Well, he’s late. Sure he’ll show?”

“Relax.” Burke massaged Eli’s neck. “He’ll be here.”

Ordinarily Michael looked forward to sizing up a new man. In fact, he’d already taken stock of every guy in the room. If Cobey didn’t show, the bartender looked like a good prospect. Prolonged eye contact, a big grin, and a wink when serving Michael’s beer. Yep, good prospect. Someone new.

Of course, Cobey would be new. Too new. Michael sighed. How was he supposed to introduce himself? Hello. I’m the guy our mutual friends have asked to be your sex instructor. How’s it hangin’? Yippee.

“There.” Eli nodded at the entrance. “Just coming in.”

For a moment it was too crowded to see much, but the herd of patrons parted. Michael licked his lips. Well, well, well. The picture hadn’t done Cobey justice. Nicely wide shoulders, narrow hips, hair a man could get a grip on. Dark eyes. A perfect mouth—full but not too full. How was it possible this gorgeous male specimen had never been intimate with another guy? And Michael had the opportunity to be the first one.

I can certainly sacrifice myself for the greater good by teaching him.

About Whitley:

Years ago Whitley read and wrote adventure stories under the covers at night. Eventually Whitley decided to write romance—at a desk, during the day. Two heroes turned out to be twice as nice. A pot of coffee and a storyline featuring a couple of guys makes for a perfect day.
