A holiday snippet…

Hello & welcome to my snippet! I’m tempted to share from one of my NaNo WIPs, but they both take place in the summer and it’s the holidays! Since I’m feeling the holiday spirit today, I’ll share a few lines from Holiday Weekend instead.

This is from Ryan’s POV. It’s Christmas Eve and a group from the Elliott Foundation House is spending the holiday at Buchanan House. Ryan and Glenn are there as volunteers. Ryan gave Glenn his Christmas gift a little early. The first dialogue is Glenn’s.

“If I get cold, I’ll just get closer to you. That’ll warm me up.” His smile stretched into a grin, and he held out his left hand. I let him help me up, but not before I took a good long look at the bracelet on his wrist. Perfect.

We went downstairs to find the tree mostly decorated but not finished. Almost everyone had red and swollen eyes, so maybe it didn’t matter that Glenn and I looked emotional.

Holiday Weekend, Buchanan House: Book Four

This novella can be read as a standalone and contains minimal spoilers for the rest of the series.

Ryan Orchard moved from small-town Idaho to Portland almost two years ago and still feels like a hick. When Paulie Nesbitt dumped him, he wasn’t even surprised. Despite losing twenty-five pounds since then, Ryan’s confidence is nonexistent and his life has stalled. Not only is he convinced the career he wants is beyond his reach, he’s given up on relationships. A new job at a familiar restaurant—and his gorgeous coworker—could be just what Ryan needs to believe in himself again.

Glenn Hernandez might be the only nineteen-year-old in Portland who dreads his days off. Between his horrible housing situation and the ever-present temptation to crawl back into the bottle, Glenn prefers to keep busy. He volunteers at the Elliott Foundation House, a homeless shelter helping LGBTQ sex workers. As an alum of the shelter, Glenn finds it hard to leave his past behind. But when the new server at the trendy restaurant where he works catches Glenn’s eye and works his way into his heart, Glenn finally has a reason to start a new life.

A safe snippet?

Hello and welcome to my snippet!

Back again this week with a house-centric snippet, from Safe House, Buchanan House: Book Four. Last time Paulie shared his feelings about the camp, and this week Kyle Shimoda has a slightly different perspective.

They came to the north end of the back porch that led up to the second floor. Kyle was in room eight—a room reserved for friends because of the hidden staircase in the bathroom—so they had to walk the entire length of the building to get there. For a second, Kyle was afraid his key wouldn’t work and they’d have to go back down. The keys at Buchanan House were the old-fashioned kind, actual keys and not key cards, and he held his breath as he slipped his into the lock. Maybe it was silly, but the smooth click of the lock giving way sounded like a good omen. Stranger things had happened than for a hookup to lead to something more.

A bonding snippet…

RSMMmedHola Snippetteers!

Hope you’re having a great day, where ever you are! This weekend I’ll be working on edits for an urban fantasy that’s due out next year and am still writing BH#6, which will be done by the end of the month if i have to forgo sleep for the whole last week!

I’m sharing from Safe House (Buchanan House: Book Four). Kyle cooked dinner at his father’s house and they’re having a rare conversation that hasn’t descended into an argument.

It’s over six sentences, but when I tried to find something to post I ended up reading a few pages and forgetting to watch out for a good snippet. And then I did it again. *lol* It’s been a little while since i’ve been able to fully participate in Rainbow Snippets so i hope you’ll all forgive me for the long snippet if i bribe you with comments on yours. 😀

“I would like to go to the beach retreat—Buchanan House.”

He’s been thinking about saying that for a while. “Why?”

“Why not? I haven’t taken a vacation in twenty-two years. It’s right on the beach, and I want to support your friends.”

“They’re doing okay, Dad.”

“Would I have to be gay to go?”

“No.” Kyle tried to think of a reason his father shouldn’t go to Buchanan House, but he couldn’t come up with anything that didn’t sound offensive in one way or another.

“So if I make a reservation, it’s okay with you?”

Kyle squirmed under his father’s gaze. “You don’t need my permission or approval.”

“No. But if you’d rather I didn’t go….”

“How about if I call and see what kind of events are coming up and when they have room?” It took a little effort, but Kyle managed not to drop his gaze from his father’s. It wasn’t easy to think about the things that went on at Buchanan House—everything he’d personally done there—with his father staring right at him.

“We could go together!” Ken Shimoda had rarely looked so delighted, so Kyle didn’t have the heart to deny him. If they took a weekend at the coast, it would be a bonding experience. Not exactly the venue Kyle had envisioned for doing that kind of thing with his father, but there were worse places.

“Um… sure. Let me work on it.”

What happens next…

RSMMmedHola Snippetteers!

I’m finally back on my laptop (after a full backup + OS rollback), but it’s a temporary solution. *fingers crossed the last snags are fixed tomorrow*

Safe House (Buchanan House: Book Four) is releasing on Monday! I’m excited and a little nervous, as usual, and will be spending Sunday trying not to obsess about it. I’m sure that will be easy. *lol*

This snippet picks up right where last week’s left off. (Read it here.)

They stood and looked at each other for what felt like a long time. Kyle’s eyes seemed a little wide. Either he was surprised, or….

This isn’t appropriate. I’ll just—

Before Bran could tell himself to apologize and leave, Kyle stepped aside, opening the door a little wider. Bran realized he’d been holding his breath and let it out in an audible sigh as he stepped into the room.

There is still time to pre-order Safe House and get Tiny House (Buchanan House: Book Three) for $0.99 at the Dreamspinner Store! (As long as you’re reading this before Sept. 19th Eastern US time. :)) Click the cover below to read Chapter One in its entirety and if you like it grab a copy.

SafeHouseFS_v1Kyle Shimoda is an asshole magnet, has been for as long as he can remember. At forty-seven, he doesn’t see much chance for improving his luck in love. His friends who run Buchanan House, a gay retreat on the central Oregon coast, know he wants to find “someone nice” to settle down with, and they set him up with Officer Brandon Smith. Kyle has a turbulent history with law enforcement, but he can’t deny his attraction to the buff cop.

Brandon has been a police officer in Lincoln City almost since the day he graduated from high school over thirty years ago. He’s cultivated the facade of a serious, disciplined law enforcement officer, but beneath his overdeveloped chest beats the soft heart of a drama queen. A cancer scare shifts Bran’s focus from finding a serious relationship to having as much sex as he can—putting his goals squarely at odds with Kyle’s. If he can’t find the courage to be honest about his feelings for Kyle, the happiness they’ve both been searching for could slip through their fingers.

A Safe House snippet & announcement!

RSMMmedHola Snippetteers!

I’ve made good progress on my edits for BH#5 so am taking some time out to actually participate in Rainbow Snippets this week, instead of pinning and running. 😀

Safe House will be released in ten days (!) so I’m snippetting from it today. This is after Guest Chef Night at Buchanan House; Kyle and Bran and the whole family have just had a great meal and most of the crowd are heading out to go dancing in Lincoln City.

As they headed for the lobby, Kyle said, “I’m in room eight.” And if he hadn’t meant the invitation Bran heard, someone was about to be very embarrassed.

Bran stood in the lobby as Kyle mounted the stairs, his heart pounding at the view of Kyle’s trim but round ass. He waited there as long as he could, not more than a moment or two, and then followed. His knock on the door of room eight was met with silence and then slow footsteps. The door opened slowly, revealing a slightly startled Kyle.

SafeHouseFS_v1Safe House (Buchanan House: Book Four) by Charley Descoteaux

It’s never too late for a new beginning…

Kyle Shimoda is an asshole magnet, has been for as long as he can remember.

He’s cultivated the facade of a serious, disciplined law enforcement officer, but beneath his overdeveloped chest beats the soft heart of a drama queen. If he can’t find the courage to be honest about his feelings for Kyle, the happiness they’ve both been searching for could slip through their fingers.

Read Chapter One at the Dreamspinner store to meet Kyle. Meet Brandon in the excerpt below.

Chapter Two

Brandon barely paid attention as he drove between the cemetery and the apartment he shared with two roommates. He’d hoped to find a voice mail from the doctor after the funeral, but no such luck. He did find one saying the new guy, Dylan, had called in sick, and Brandon was expected at work within the hour. He would have been happier to stay at the cemetery and talk with Paulie a little longer. And Kyle. Bran had met Kyle before, but they hadn’t spoken. He had noticed then how handsome Kyle was, and he was even more striking with his hair longer, framing his high cheekbones and full, sensuous mouth. His silky black hair looked so touchable.

This isn’t getting me to work any faster.

At least work will be a distraction.

He hurried home and changed into his uniform. His quick spot check in the bathroom mirror turned into a lingering appraisal. Brandon ran an open hand over his chest, not to smooth the impeccable fabric of his uniform shirt, but to reassure himself that nothing had changed. He grimaced at his reflection, thinking a little less gray and a little more brown in his hair might be a nice change.

Brandon shivered as he recalled the MRI he’d endured three days prior, which had revealed a suspicious lump in his chest. Forty-seven minutes in a tiny tube while the machine hummed and took pictures of his breast and lymph tissue. Just thinking about the way it had felt to lie there made him shiver—it was worse than the needle biopsy he’d had the following day. With every inhale his shoulders had brushed the walls of the tube on both sides, and less than halfway through he’d had to talk himself out of fleeing. He wasn’t a tall man—something that had bothered him throughout his life—but until that day he had taken pride in his body, in the bulk he’d cultivated without sacrificing speed or agility.

During that forty-seven minutes, he would have been happy to trade his broad shoulders for a smaller frame.

Since I’m making empty wishes, I might as well make one for a better-looking face. A face that could attract a handsome young guy like Kyle instead of scaring him half to death.

Bran’s stomach roiled at his own thoughts, and he resolved to not even think the word death again until—unless—he had to. He was tempted to forgo shaving the sandy brown stubble from his face but fell back on the habit, hoping for the comfort a routine could provide, and reached for his electric razor.

Everything seemed to be happening so fast. Less than a week ago he’d gone in for his yearly physical, and now he was waiting for the call that would tell him whether he needed to make another appointment for that week or next year. In the interim he’d been squeezed into a tube and had a biopsy. And relived the worst time in his life over and over, the time when he’d learned about his father’s diagnosis.

A revealing snippet & giveaway!

RSMMmedHappy Caturday, Snippetteers!

Today, not only do I have a fully edited snippet to share, I have a cover!

It’s getting close to release day for the next Buchanan House book! Safe House is available for pre-order now at the Dreamspinner store. If you don’t have your copy of Tiny House yet you might want to wait a couple of weeks to grab Safe House. There might be a good reason to wait. Just sayin’. 😉

The snippet below is from Kyle’s POV, during a quiet moment at his Cinderella ball.

He knew it wouldn’t be long before someone would drag him back to the party, but he’d stay on the fringes as long as possible. Maybe it would be long enough to figure out why he couldn’t stop thinking about Brandon Smith. He might be a nice guy, but Kyle couldn’t see any reason to be fixated on the man, even without taking into account that he had voluntarily chosen a career in law enforcement. For all Kyle knew, Brandon had never racially profiled anyone.

Maybe I’m developing a kink? From now on I’ll be attracted to men who trip my fight-or-flight response? Maybe even guys who actually scare me?

Thanks for reading!

And here’s the gorgeous cover!

SafeHouseFS_v1

To celebrate the fact that L.C. Chase keeps knocking it out of the park with the covers for this series I’m going to give away an ebook copy of book one, Buchanan House, to a commenter on this post. Random.org will choose on Sunday afternoon after Fear the Walking Dead. 🙂

A sweet, lingering snippet…

RSMMmed

Hello Snippetteers and welcome! It’s nice to be back after deadlines and Pride monopolizing most of my last two weekends. I’m looking forward to making the reading rounds later. 🙂

In honor of almost having the cover art completed for BH#4 I’ll be snippetting from that story today. We’re in Brandon Smith’s POV, he’s at a communal table at Buchanan House having dinner—sitting next to someone else readers of the series will recognize. Bran has just asked how long Kyle stayed on the beach after he was called away earlier that afternoon.

Sorry if that intro is overly cryptic—the snippet is edited, so there’s that. 😉

“About another hour or so. The wind picked up, or I would’ve finished this—” Kyle leaned over and swiped the screen twice to reveal the side where the dragon had been. He had gotten a friend. The dragon was cool, a little cartoony but not too silly, and when Kyle paged through the pictures, he also leaned against Brandon’s arm. The silvery-gray shirt was thin, and Bran felt the lines of a muscular chest beneath it. Kyle was slender but obviously not skinny—still, Bran hadn’t expected him to have defined pecs any more than he’d expected Kyle to press them against his arm. A quick glance said Kyle knew exactly what he was doing, and the effect it had on Brandon. After a sweet, lingering moment in which Bran’s face pointed at the screen but his mind was full of the desire to run his hands over Kyle, to feel the hard body beneath what was probably a soft and touchable shirt, Kyle moved back into his chair.
