A tiny snippet!

Hello and welcome to my snippet!

Editing and the pretty things for Art House are finished so now all I have to do is wait two whole months to show it all off! The tortures authors bear for our art! *lol*

Oh, one thing I can probably share: Art House, Buchanan House: Book Six will be released on August 21! The cover is really lovely, but more about that later.

In October I started sharing snippets from the series and then got overwhelmed trying to finish up my recovery. The last one was from book two, so here’s something from book three, Tiny House, on the same theme–the ways different characters see the house itself.

The sight of Buchanan House never failed to stir Paulie’s emotions. On the one hand, it was a charming old hotel, meticulously restored and cared for by people he loved. On the other, it had stolen Nathan Lucas from Portland and the restaurant where they’d worked together. Two years before, if someone had asked whether Paulie wanted to live in the country, he would’ve laughed at the idea. Outside of Portland, where he’d lived his entire life? More than a weekend just sounded like crazy talk.

#RainbowSnippets : A little on-sub luck!

Hand drawing heart in sand on the beach

Welcome, lovers of LGBTQ+ books! Huge thank you hugs to everyone who has made Rainbow Snippets such a fun group. I’ve been looking forward to the support and encouragement in your comments every week–and not only on my own posts!

Today’s snippet is from Kyle and Brandon’s book, Safe House. It’s currently under consideration so i’m hoping for a little on-sub luck. Previous snippets from this story can be found here.

This bit is a couple of chapters later than the last one and we’re back in Kyle’s head. He’s just found Bran on the beach, practicing for a sandcastle contest he enters every summer. The opening dialogue is his.

This snippet is longer than usual but i had a hard time finding one that followed the rules and also made sense. Probably because i’ve been pouring over a galley most of the day and my eyes are crossing. I’ll go back to conforming next week. Probably. 😉

“You just need to keep it from drying out too much. Once the sand gets past a certain point there’s no going back—it’ll lose its cohesion, and when you wet it down again the sculpture will dissolve.”

“That’s exactly what happens.” Bran stepped up beside Kyle and they faced the castle. “I know you’re on a long weekend, but could I tempt you to share some of your sandcastle knowledge with me? Over drinks? Or dinner?”

Kyle checked his watch and tried not to swallow too loudly. Too late he realized that if his hand or arm had been shaking that might not have been the smoothest move—and it surely felt like they were, with all the pent up desire he’d been quashing for the past six months.

#RainbowSnippets : 6 from the love interest…

RS5med

Welcome, lovers of LGBTQ+ books! Huge thank you hugs to everyone who has made it such a fun place to visit. I’ve been looking forward to the support and encouragement in your comments every week–and not only on my own posts!

Today’s snippet is from my WIP (that’s due Monday!), Book 3 in my Buchanan House series set at a queer retreat on the central Oregon coast. We’re in Brandon’s POV today (the love interest :)). Previous snippets can be found here.

Brandon sat at his desk  trying to get caught up on paperwork, but not having much luck in forcing his mind on task. His current interior monologue centered on why he’d hidden out at his mom’s on his days off instead of going back to the camp and pursuing Kyle. He and Minnie had both enjoyed the conversation and the cribbage and her garden had needed attention she wasn’t up to giving it anymore, so at the time it hadn’t seemed like hiding out. Hindsight forced him to question his motives.

Why? A hookup is a hookup and that’s all it was, all it was supposed to be, wrap your mind around that, Smith.

An inappropriate smile…

RSMMmed

Welcome, lovers of LGBTQ+ books! It’s that time again, when writers and bloggers share 6 sentences of fiction or a book rec.

It’s been a long week, i hope you’re enjoying the weekend (or whatever day you happen to read this :)).

I’ve been sharing from book three of my first-ever series, the Buchanan House Love Stories, and yesterday i learned the audio version of book #1 has finished production! It’s surreal to listen to my words in the hands of a professional voice actor! In about three weeks Buchanan House should hit Audible. Stay tuned for updates…if you like audio books.

Now for the reason you visited in the first place. We’re back with Kyle today; I’ll be snippeting from BH#3 until i make that deadline on Feb. 1 and maybe a bit longer. This is the third bit of BH#3; if you missed any and want to catch up you can find them all here.

Today’s follows directly after last week’s; Kyle’s just thought about how his friends are going to be setting him up with “someone nice” over the long weekend. Please squint while you read, so the creative punctuation and unedited prose won’t hurt your eyes.:)

A smile spread across Kyle’s features even as he tried to keep a handle on it; he was at a funeral, and the only non-white person in attendance so he already stuck out without an inappropriate smile on his face. The face that was a perfect replica of his father’s—Kenzou Shimoda—even though Kyle’s mother had been French Canadian and Irish.

A deep voice called out softly for Paulie, breaking into Kyle’s thoughts of his mother.

“Brandon?” Paulie sounded surprised as he extended a hand toward the Lincoln City police officer. Brandon Smith wasn’t in uniform, but even if Kyle hadn’t known what he did for a living Brandon’s posture spoke of strict discipline and hyper-alertness.

BH#3, the snippetry continues…

We’re back with Kyle today; I’ll be snippeting from BH#3 until mid-Feb at least. Last time i shared the opening, if you missed it you can find it here. For today’s i’ve skipped a few sentences to get closer to the fun part of Chapter One. The funeral is over but Kyle and Paulie haven’t left yet. Paulie’s just scanned the remaining faces, obviously looking for someone in particular.

Kyle had a moment to wonder if Paulie was disappointed or only preoccupied before a familiar form separated from the slow procession toward the parking lot. Kyle knew Paulie’s invitation to spend the weekend at Buchanan House was meant to hide a set-up, but he couldn’t bring himself to be upset about it. Ever since Paulie and Nathan’s wedding six weeks before, he’d been waiting for it. Three boutonnieres and a wedding bouquet hitting him square in the chest turned out to be a signal even he couldn’t fail to notice. It looked like all of Kyle’s friends knew he wanted to find someone nice.

Ha, someone nice. How many times have I heard that in the past year?

A new WIP for #RainbowSnippets

511001645Hello and Happy Holidays, snippet lovers!

Welcome to my Rainbow Snippets post. In case you haven’t heard, RS is a group on Facebook where authors and bloggers get together on the weekends to share six sentences of fiction or a book recommendation. You’re officially invited to become a member of the group, to post or to read the weekly snippets, or both. It’s a laid-back group (it runs on West Coast US time, so it kind of has to be ;))–members leave links to their snippets on the pinned post and everyone hops around reading when they’re able.

This week i’m posting from a new story because it’s on deadline and i need the encouragement. 🙂 If accepted this will be the third book in my Buchanan House series (technically the 4th, but more on that later), in which Kyle Shimoda gets tortured for about 200 pages on his quest to find someone nice and settle down. These are the first six sentences, unedited and rife with creative punctuation, so please squint a little while you’re reading.

Kyle reminded himself for the tenth time (at least) that he stood graveside at a stranger’s funeral for Paulie. Even though the mere thought of a funeral made his skin crawl, if Paulie needed an escort Kyle would push his own feelings aside and be there for him.

Dwelling on that felt better than the knowledge that attending a funeral was better than what he would’ve been doing otherwise—playing second fiddle at Puddle Jumper or dancing with any man who didn’t say no and hoping he wouldn’t turn out to be another dead end. Not that Kyle would be dancing and drinking in the middle of the day. His life had been reduced to work and sleep, with increasingly smaller portions of fun sprinkled in.

Valentine’s Day was last weekend; get over it already.
