Valentine’s Day Sale!

As an indie author, I can do anything I want with my books. So, I’m having a Valentine’s Day sale! The standalone novella Always Forward! Never Straight is $0.99 In both the US and UK through 2/17!

Love isn’t a sprint, it’s a marathon.

Baxter Bryan is the nerdy half of BaxCo, a start-up in Portland’s Silicon Forest creating cutting-edge high-tech toys. He’s also a hermit. When BaxCo sponsors the Portland Rock and Roll Half Marathon, Bryan decides to break out of his comfort zone and do more than listen to the music with a beer in hand. The race has barely started when he bumps into a fit, handsome man, causing sparks to fly. But the long hours needed to make BaxCo a success aren’t the only reason Bryan spends most of his time alone in his apartment.

Cay Nissen runs every day to stay in shape. He would love to run away from his job in a Silicon Forest cube farm, but keeps returning to support his teenaged daughter. His true love is music. Cay writes songs for the band he helped form in high school but doesn’t see any way to turn music into a career. The half marathon seemed like a decent way to pass a Saturday, make his boss happy, and catch a performance of his old band all at the same time. When he meets a man who sparks his interest, the safety of his cubicle isn’t the only part of his life that’s in jeopardy of changing.

A Happy Pride Snippet!

Hello and welcome to my snippet! It’s been a while but I think I remember how this is supposed to work. 😀

In honor of Pride Month, here’s a little snippet from Always Forward! Never Straight, in which Cay and Bry are making plans for after the Festival grounds have closed. We’re in Cay’s POV and the first line is his.

“I have Mac until six. After that, how about we go dancing?”

He laughed and rested both hands on my hips. “I’m not much of a dancer.”

“I don’t care.” I leaned in to whisper in his ear, and he shivered. “I want to rub against you for a couple of hours and then go somewhere and get naked.”

A restrained snippet… (no, not *that* kind of restrained :))

Hello and welcome to my snippet! For some reason I feel like I’ve shared part of this one before but couldn’t find any evidence of that so here it is now.

This is from Always Forward! Never Straight, our heroes are at Pride with Cay’s daughter. We’re in Cay’s POV.

The three of us walked up and down each aisle checking out the booths while commenting on everything and everyone, and I restrained myself admirably. Not one word of anti-capitalist or anti-assimilationist rhetoric crossed my lips in three whole hours. Finally, Mac turned to me and squinted.

“Who are you and what have you done with my dad?”

For the first time since he’d arrived, I released Bryan. My side felt cold, even though the day was a balmy seventy-nine degrees.

“I’m being nice, so shush.”

“Don’t shush me. Don’t you think Bryan deserves to know what he’s gotten himself into?”

I said “no” at the same time he said “doesn’t matter.”

“Ugh. You two are giving me cavities. Speaking of food, I saw a Mexican place near the stage. Let’s go.”

A relaxed snippet…

Hello  welcome to my first snippet of 2019! I meant to snip last weekend but caught a stomach bug instead & spent Saturday watching Marie Kondo between naps. Now that that’s over (the bug, not my infatuation with the KonMari Method ♥), here’s more from Always Forward! Never Straight!

I might regret this, but since some folx asked how Bryan’s coming out was received by his father, I thought I’d share that. This is from Cay’s POV in case that’s not clear from the get-go and is a little longer than six sentences but some of them are short. 😀

When you told your dad you had a boyfriend, what did he do?”

“Yelled. A lot.” Bryan winced, but when he leaned against my side, he still seemed relaxed. “Especially after I told him I was bi. He tried to convince me I’d be much happier if I found a nice girl. I wished I had a sibling then, to take some of the pressure off me. The rest of the time I lived at home I was under a microscope.”

“Must not have been fun.”

He shrugged and then rubbed his arm against my side and sighed. “I missed you.”

A hopeful snippet…

Hello & Happy Last Weekend of 2018! I usually think of New Year’s Day as just another day off work, but this year is different; 2018 was a special kind of craptastical year and I’ll be glad to see the end of it!

Until then here’s another snippet from Always Forward! Never Straight. This is still at the half-marathon, the men have known each other all of about ten minutes and Cay has just told Bry that the bass player in the band they’re watching is his daughter’s mother, sending Bryan down a rabbit hole.

But if they were married wouldn’t he have said “my wife” instead of “my daughter’s mother”?

Maybe it isn’t hopeless.

And maybe two million people will decide overnight to buy Alfred, and I can retire to a tropical island.

I laughed aloud at my thoughts. That was a familiar refrain, about the tropical island. Maybe the fact that this alluring man had been named for one was a sign.

Not a holiday-themed snippet…

Hello & Happy Holidays to all who celebrate! Since I really don’t, my snippet isn’t holiday themed at all. If you’re in the mood for a break, I hope you enjoy this teensy one.

I’m sharing another snippet from ALWAYS FORWARD! NEVER STRAIGHT, in anticipation of its release on 1/1/19! This week our heroes are at Pride and talking about coming out stories. The first bit of dialogue is our MC, Bryan; second is Mac, Cay’s 15 y/o daughter; last, is Cay.

“Um…it’s not very interesting. My dad asked if I wanted him to take me to rent a tux for junior prom. I told him no, and he said, ‘Ladies appreciate a smart dresser.’ So I told him I wasn’t going because everyone would freak out if I danced with my boyfriend.”

“What year was that?”

“Mac, it’s not polite to ask how old someone is.”
