Hola Snippetteers and welcome!
I’m sharing from a new story today, the one that will hopefully become BH#6–the last book in my Buchanan House series. Which might explain why i’ve been stalling working on it. I’ve loved writing this series and don’t really want it to be over (even if it will be nice to write something completely different).
Here are the first six lines. Hopefully posting them will help light a fire under me to get this story finished before deadline. It has a lot of heavy lifting to do where the series is concerned. 🙂
Chase watched as more figures appeared behind the mourners standing around the mouth of the open grave, huddled under their umbrellas. The new group wasn’t dressed for the weather, they wore shorts and sandals, their hair hanging in long unruly strings and obscuring their faces. He found it harder and harder to breathe, and to act like he wasn’t watching.
Garrett might stop drawing if he felt everyone’s attention on him and Chase didn’t want that to happen. The plain brown paper covering the table at Brewfest could use more than the standard “X Loves Y” and “Kilroy Was Here” type of graffiti but the real reason was that he loved to watch Garrett work. Even when his work veered into dark places as it was obviously doing.
Thanks for reading!

This threw me for a minute. I started out thinking it was a real funeral and had trouble making the mental connection to the drawing. (But then, I had a long tiring day yesterday and may not be fully “here” mentally.)
It’s also unedited, so there’s that. 🙂 Thanks for visiting, PT!
Wow, this was beautiful!
Thank you! ❤
Whoa, abrupt mental shift needed there! Interesting opening. 🙂
Thanks,JL! 😀
I…just…want…more…
Please. 🙂
At first I thought it was a real funeral, but wow. Very effective. I really need to read this series.
You scared me for a minute. I was running over the list of characters to see who you had killed… lol 😂
So glad for the second paragraph. Can’t wait to read the rest of the series.
I have to start this series soon! Sounds great, Charlie. 😉
What a very interesting change of perspective in this.
Interesting opening. I too thought the funeral was real for a moment.
At first, I was like…OMG, who did you kill off???? And then I caught on to what was happening. Love it, and I’m already sad that it’s the last one. But leave us wanting more, right? Better than “Oh, thank God it’s over.” 🙂
I like how the contrasts in the picture itself played against the surprise of the perspective change. Neat.
