Exclusive Excerpt:

A grin, and maybe a hint of a flush, spread across the warrior’s face. “Only the best from each agélai are chosen.” Theron laid the bronze blade he’d been eating with on the table and drew the iron weapon from its sheath. “I was granted this knife when I became a kryptes.”

Staring at the knife of a kryptes, Andreas fought not to shudder as a chill fist squeezed his heart. His father had died upon such a blade.

What was he doing, inviting a murderer into his home? “I just wanted someone to talk to and you seemed hungry. A kryptes…” Andreas trailed off. How much had he spoken out loud? He was so used to talking to himself that the line between thought and speech sometimes blurred. The warrior didn’t seem angry, so he couldn’t have said too much.

Speculation and perhaps understanding filled Theron’s eyes. “You’re so lonely you’d risk my company?”

Andreas turned away, unable to dispute the man’s uncanny insight. How did one answer a question such as that? Maybe his silence was all the answer the man needed.

When he glanced back, Theron nodded. “So be it. But don’t light the lamp again until you’ve shuttered the window. Anyone could see us, and I don’t want any harm coming to you.”

Popping an olive into his mouth, Andreas worried the flesh from the pit, pondering what the warrior had said. A kryptes cared if he, a helot, came to harm? Could he trust the man?

About Kayla:

Kayla Jameth grew up on the family farm in Ohio, baling hay, raising cattle, and making maple syrup. An unrepentant tomboy, her father taught her to weld before she graduated from high school.

She attended Cleveland’s Case Western Reserve University and later, Texas A&M University in her pursuit of veterinary medicine, taking her farther away from her rural roots. You can transplant the county girl, but you can’t make her a city slicker. Besides, it was only going to be for a little while, right?

But it wasn’t all hard work for Kayla, her sojourn as the princess of the Celestial Kingdom left her with the title sir and a costume closet the envy of many knights, lords, and ladies. See? She does have some ladylike qualities complete with the title of Lady to back it up.

After declaring for years that she was just a veterinarian who wrote not an author, Kayla now finds herself living in Spring, Texas (practically Houston) and writing m/m erotic romance. The location is probably a bigger surprise than the genre. Never the kind of girl to discuss makeup and clothing designers, she would rather be outside getting dirty with the boys.

Kayla shares her home with a cat, two guinea pigs, a gerbil, three guppies, a husband and a son and daughter.

It was a pleasure meeting you at the Dreamspinner Press author’s workshop earlier this year. I had a great time. And I guess what happens in Portland stays in Portland!
